Air League CEO Janine Hornsby calls for greater inclusivity in aviation; Gold Medal honours Sir Stelios

On 13 November 2025, The Air League of Monaco had the privilege of hearing from Janine Hornsby MBA, CEO of The Air League (UK) at the Stelios Foundation Conference Hall Monaco.

A people-focused leader and advocate for inclusion, Janine shared insights on one of the most pressing challenges facing the aviation sector today: the growing workforce shortage.

Current data indicates that approximately 30% of the aviation workforce will retire within the next 5–10 years, while training programmes are currently meeting only 25% of the required demand.

The Air League implements initiatives designed to increase accessibility and diversity in aviation. From 2023 to 2025, the organisation has:

·        Reached over 32,000 students across the UK
·        Engaged with 720 schools
·        Provided 540 students with a flying experience
·        Ensured that 1 in 4 scholars were from ethnic minority backgrounds
·        Supported 45% of scholars whose parents had not attended university
·        Awarded more than 120 scholarships annually

These achievements are made possible through partnerships and philanthropic support, including contributions from Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, President of The Air League of Monaco, to which he was awarded the gold medal tonight. His support enables scholarships for aspiring pilots and engineers who may otherwise lack access to aviation education.

While progress has been made, there remains significant work to do, particularly in encouraging greater participation from women and underrepresented groups.

The Air League of Monaco remains committed to supporting initiatives that open pathways into aviation for all young people, ensuring a diverse and sustainable future for the industry.
